Hello Bob,
Could you write all information from you two previouse post again but in English? Google translate is making the transition but it's poor and it's difficult to understand the connection between people you are discribing.
Sorry for my english.

I completely understand what you are saying. When I use Google translate to read Polish I often come away more confused than I started.

I have researched my lineage all the way back to the family that emigrated to America. That is where my information stops. The parents, according to the information I have found, are John Rymsza, which could be "Jan", and Ludwiga Brotkowska. Both were born around 1825. John was said to have been born in Lodzkie, Poland which I'm assuming is Lodz. They had 7 children which are:

Jerome born 1849 in Lodzkie, Poland
Frank born 1852 in Poland
Kajeton born 1860 in Lodzkie, Poland
Michael born 1864 in Poland
Helen born 1865 in Poland
Julia born 1866 in Szawley, Poland
John born 1869 in Poland

I cannot confirm that these are the actual children's names as they may have been Americanized when they arrived. I'm not even sure they all emigrated to America.

However, my lineage comes through Frank who emigrated in 1895 with his family from Suwalken. At least I think this is them. What i'm interested in is John, his siblings and their children, and John's lineage.

Thanks again in advance
Bob

Hello Bob,

I made a quick research on polish websites and for this moment I didn't find anything interesting I found that mostly this last name appear in XIX century in Podlaskie province and in Lithaunia (this province is located near Lithaunia). Looking at this we can assume that part of your family came from Suwalszczyzna (a part of Podlaskie province, near city Suwalki).

Tha names of children in Polish would be:
- Jerome - probably Jeremi
- Frank - Franciszek
- Kajeton - Kajetan
- Michael - Michał
- Helen - Helena
- Julia - just Julia
- John - Jan

The parents names would be Jan and Ludwika. Brotkowski (male form)/ Brotkowska (female form) is really not popular last name in Poland, I found only one person with this last name. The interesting information for you may be that the last name Brotkowski can have its own coat of arms - Ślepowron. In such case it's possible that your ancestors both were from a noble families.

You wrote about Łódźkie. This means more province Łódźkie than the city of Łódź.

Do you have any documents related with your ancestors? Ship manifest? Do you know if all of them Jan, Ludwika and all their children came to USA? I was able to find only information about Jerome.

The problem is that i'm not able to find books with certificates from Suwałki from interesting you years. And I don't know where to start searching in Łódzkie province...

Best regards,
Magda

Magda,

To the best of my knowledge Jan and Ludwika did not emigrate to America. I can confirm that Frank, Jerome, Kajeton, Helen, and Julia all died in America. I have no death info on Michael or John. I did have a difficult time finding emigration information, just as you did, on those that did cross. I believe that they did not travel under their given surname of Rymsza or those that wrote it down badly misspelled it. I found a ships manifest that I believe is for Frank and his family. It list the name as Franz Rimsche with wife Constanze, and children Stanislawa, Alexander, Victoria, Stanislav, and Wladislav. The residence was listed as Suwalken, Russland. A piece of information I have for Julia says she was born in Szawley, Poland but I wasn't sure how accurate it is. I found yet another ships manifest that looks like Frank and Jerome traveled here at an earlier date under another misspelled version of the name. Magda, I'm not sure if traveling under a different name was intentional or just a German crewmember misspelling the name. However, given the turmoil of the area for that time period I wouldn't be surprised if they were hiding their identity for some reason.

Hi Bob,

I would put on misspelling as I can see that other polish first and last names also has been misspelled, however you never know. It was more than 30 years after January Upraising. Łódź was in 1895 was in Russian annexation if I remember correctly and as the family was from Suwałki area then I don't know why thay would need to change last name to travel to USA.

The information about Frank gives me some clue how to search information about your family. I will let you know if I will find something.

Best regards,
Magda

Magda,

I did some more digging after you told me that Lodzkie was too big of a hint. I thought that Lodzkie was just another way of saying the city of Lodz. I found a reference in a family history that says that Jerome's wife, Agatha, emigrated at the age of 33 with Jerome's little brother John age 12 in 1884. It also says that Lodz is the city from which the first family members emigrated. So I'm assuming that at least the children moved to Lodz at some point. However, it is also known that brother Michael remained in Suwalki, a province in the heart of the lake district and located northeast of Lodz. It was here that a family remained in the small town of Sejny until the 1970's.

Also, I think there may be a chance that Michael may be the father of Roman Piotr Rymsza. Roman was born to Michael and Josephine Rymsza February 22, 1892 in Sejny. He was killed at the Katyn Forest Massacre in 1940.
It says nothing about Jan and Ludwiga but hopefully I've narrowed down the search area.

Thanks again for your help Magda.

I'm not able to connect them to your Rymsza family.
The only record that could fit is Jan Rymsza born in Suwałki on 11.01.1821 who could be father of Frank and his sibling, but for this moment there is no confirmation of that.

Wow Magda!!

That's a lot of info! Much more than I ever expected. Thank you so much. Even so, many of these names fit into the Rymsza h. Gozdawa puzzle and maybe bring me a little closer to solving it whichever way it goes. Forgive my ignorance as I do not live there. Do these records include the town of Sejny? Any suggestions as to what you think I might do next?

One other question, the birth certificates that do not show the parents. Is that because they were not listed?

I knew that the Poles were heavily persecuted by the Nazi's but it is very disturbing for me to see the names that I have become familiar with over the last month. How sad. Thank you for bringing it to my attention Magda.

Magda:

While scanning the internet I did a search on Sejny & Rymsza. I found a page that I believe says that the roots of the surname originate around Lozdzieje which I believe is in Lithuania. Looking at a map it is very close to Sejny. I don't know if you have any way of searching that or if it even helps you with your search but I thought I would share it.

I found some additional information on the web site - http://rzecz-pospolita.com/wilen/ksiega.php

It seams that someone is trying to contact with people with last name Rymsza.

Liuda Kuraitiene was asking to contact here on e-mail address 'liudaviola at hotmail.com' she is probably from Lithuania. And as she wrote she is related with Rymsza family.

Maybe you should try to contact Liuda?

Reagrding town Łoździeje now Lazdijai in Lituania it's near to Polish boarder so it's possible that Rymsza family come from this town. Unfortunately there is no certificated from this place that I would know about. However I will try to find something
